ETHIOPIA — Layo Teraga, Uraga

Blood Orange, Raspberry, Rhubarb
Natural, Landrace - 74110
Layo Teraga Cooperative, 2342 MASL

Description

From the northern highlands of Uraga—one of Ethiopia’s most exalted coffee-growing regions—comes a natural-processed lot that is as vibrant as the landscape that shaped it. Produced by the Layo Teraga Cooperative, a community of more than 1,800 smallholder farmers cultivating semi-forested gardens at a staggering 2,342 meters above sea level, this coffee reflects both the biodiversity of Guji and the resilience of the producers who transformed an isolated region into a beacon of quality.

Founded in 1976 to expand market access for rural growers, Layo Teraga has become synonymous with meticulous agronomy, heirloom genetics, and uncompromising community-driven craft. The combination of extreme elevation, cool forest canopy, and slow cherry maturation yields a cup marked by explosive fruit intensity and polished clarity.

Process & Craftsmanship

This lot is traditionally natural processed, yet handled with exceptional care: cherries are selectively handpicked by smallholder families, then dried whole on raised beds in thin layers to preserve even dehydration and prevent overfermentation. The high-altitude climate—cool nights and crisp, dry days—extends the drying cycle, allowing sugars to concentrate and aromatics to develop with precision. The result is a natural that balances the wildness of fruit-forward profiles with the elegance and structure characteristic of Uraga terroir.

Cup Profile

Expect a cascade of red fruits through raspberries, lifted by a vivid blood orange-like acidity. Notes of rhubarb lend a tart, almost sparkling edge, while a subtle rosemary fragrance threads through the finish, giving the cup a herbal sophistication. The body is silky yet weighty, with a clean sweetness that lingers long after the sip.

A quintessential high-elevation Ethiopian natural: abundant, expressive, and deeply layered in tradition—closely tied to its origin.
